In 1989 the Dome Leisure centre was formally opened by Diana Princess of Wales and part of the complex was a four rink indoor bowling green. Three rinks were allocated to the newly formed Dome Bowling Club, with the other rink left free for members of the public to use. But, due to the lack of support from the public, Doncaster Council decided that more revenue could be raised if it was changed to a gym and fitness complex, ending the bowling at the Dome.
So, the bowls committee had discussions with the council and with the help from Sport England Lottery Funds and members loans, a piece of land was acquired in Hexthorpe and in June 2001, a new 6 rink indoor bowling Club was opened.
In 2003, the club formally changed its name from The Dome Bowling Club Ltd to Doncaster Indoor Bowling Club and was granted charity status in 2004.
Now home to over 200 members, the club has a variety of leagues to join, including Doubles, Triples, Aussie Pairs and the roving jack. The Shuffles and the Rotherham league are also popular. During its 20 years in existence, the club has hosted county games, the Special Olympics, North v South Fire Service and Deaf England Bowls matches.
In 2022 a new carpet was installed at the club.
